Where we work

Working for and

in East Brighton

The word ‘deprived’ has many negative connotations. Yes there are some stark figures relative to the East Brighton area, however, we are committed to building and supporting our incredible community through our social investment and grants programmes and, if anything, these reports make us even more determined to help engineer change.

our community

East Brighton is defined by the council boundaries as the areas marked out on the map opposite. It includes Whitehawk, Manor Farm, Bristol Estate, Craven Vale, Saunders Park, Moulsecoomb, Bevendean and Bates Estate.

The Index of Multiple Deprivation combines information from seven domains to produce an overall relative measure of deprivation. The domains are combined using the following weights:

  • Income Deprivation (22.5%)
  • Employment Deprivation (22.5%)
  • Education, Skills and Training Deprivation (13.5%)
  • Health Deprivation and Disability (13.5%)
  • Crime (9.3%)
  • Barriers to Housing and Services (9.3%)
  • Living Environment Deprivation (9.3%)

These figures demonstrate that East Brighton Trust is working in what can be described as some of the most deprived areas in the whole of England. Through our social investment programme and grants schemes we aim to address this by enabling local people and organisations to make a positive difference to their own lives and the communities they live in.
