East Brighton Trust Announces Next Steps for the Future of The Bevy Building

East Brighton Trust (EBT) is today sharing an update on the future of The Bevy building as we enter an important new chapter for our organisation and the communities we serve.

For more than a decade, EBT has been proud to champion The Bevy. Through subsidised rent, grants, hands-on support, training, management advice and governance guidance, we have worked closely with the committee and team to help the pub grow into the vibrant community hub it is today. The Bevy’s achievements and the dedication of the people behind it remain a source of real pride for us.

As EBT moves into a new strategic phase from 2026, we will be increasing our direct involvement in projects that promote skills development, enterprise and creativity. Our move into Moulsecoomb Place, and the opportunities emerging through partnership with local organisations and social enterprises, mark an important moment for us to reinvest our resources and deepen our long-term impact across East Brighton.

In line with this shift in direction, EBT intends to place The Bevy building and its associated flats on the market from January 2026, with the clear aim of supporting the creation of a wider community regeneration project for the area. This decision reflects our evolving strategy, not a change in our respect for, or commitment to, The Bevy community. Our priority is to identify a community-minded, ethical and values-aligned purchaser who can protect and build upon The Bevy’s social legacy while contributing to a broader vision for local renewal and social benefit.

To achieve this, the sale process will follow the principles of the Asset of Community Value (ACV) framework. We will begin with an initial six-month, moratorium-style period during which we will explore all viable options with housing associations, community developers, and other socially focused partners. Our goal is to secure a future for the site that retains meaningful community use alongside wider social benefit, potentially including social housing or other forms of community infrastructure.

To provide continuity for The Bevy during this transition, EBT will grant a six-month deed-of-variation lease from January to June 2026, with the option of a monthly rolling arrangement thereafter if needed. This structure offers stability for The Bevy while enabling EBT to undertake a thorough, responsible search for the right purchaser. EBT also has a duty of care to the tenants living in the flats above The Bevy, and we are in regular contact with them to ensure they are fully informed and supported throughout this process.

This next step comes after many years of partnership, shared ambition and consistent support for The Bevy’s community mission. EBT remains committed to open dialogue throughout this process and to ensuring that community benefit continues to guide every decision we take.

We extend our thanks to The Bevy committee, team, volunteers and customers for their ongoing commitment. As we look ahead, we remain focused on stewarding this transition responsibly, honouring the equity The Bevy has built, and securing a buyer who can carry its community spirit forward for years to come.
