Moulsecoomb Place

Home to creativity, collaboration and community.

Moulsecoomb Place is a home for creativity, collaboration, and opportunity right in the heart of East Brighton. Developed by East Brighton Trust in partnership with AudioActive, this vibrant community space brings together creative organisations, social enterprises, and local residents to share skills, ideas, and inspiration.

This is a place where local people can connect, learn, and access the things that have been the preserve of those from the centre of the city for too long.

What is

Moulsecoomb Place?

Located at the iconic Moulsecoomb Place on Lewes Road, the historic Manor House and Tithe Barn are now under EBT’s stewardship on a head lease. At the heart of the site is The Skep, a warm, flexible community space designed for meeting, making, learning and collaborating. Inside Moulsecoomb Place, you’ll also find professional studios, shared workspaces, and additional community areas hosting everything from mentoring sessions and youth creative projects to workshops, food events, and advice drop-ins.

Every organisation based here contributes to a shared mission: to make creativity and opportunity accessible to everyone in East Brighton.

A Space that Gives back

Moulsecoomb Place runs on a simple but powerful idea: the community benefits first.

Every tenant and partner at Moulsecoomb Place signs a Community Contract, committing to give something back. That could mean mentoring young people, offering workshops, or sharing skills with schools and local groups.

It’s how we make sure that what happens inside these walls supports what’s happening outside, helping the whole community to have the opportunities they’ve been denied for too long. With many local homes being converted into HMOs in recent years, and after all the new buildings in the area, EBT felt it was imperative to preserve these historic buildings for the community they’re part of, ensuring they remain a space for collective use rather than being at risk of further private development.

Who’s Here

Moulsecoomb Place is already home to a diverse group of creative tenants and community partners, all part of a collaborative ecosystem that’s helping to shape the future of East Brighton.

Our tenants include:

  • AudioActive – Founded in 1999 by a small group of music lovers and youth workers, AudioActive makes music accessible to all young people, regardless of background. What began as a handful of community sessions has grown into a county-wide movement, offering free, open-access opportunities that build confidence, creativity, and connection through music.
  • Culture Shift  – Culture Shift brings together those who are often overlooked and underserved in our communities. They address health and social inequalities by creating opportunities to experience arts activities together.
  • Vincent Dance Theatre – Vincent Dance Theatre offers free, open access dance, movement and performance opportunities for young people across Brighton and Sussex, and trauma informed creative health projects with women at risk, working in and with our most underserved communities. VDT’s socially engaged production work is seen on stage and screened on film across the UK.

Together, they’re helping to create a new model for creative and community collaboration that’s local, inclusive, and accessible.

Why Moulsecoomb Place Matters.

East Brighton has always been full of entrepreneurial people, latent talent, and community ‘can do’, but for many, access to creative and cultural opportunities has been limited. A report in 2024  by The Sutton Trust revealed stark inequalities in access to the creative industries for working class people.

By opening Moulsecoomb Place, we’re trying to change that. We’re creating a space where everyone can explore their potential, whether through the arts, training, enterprise, or simply connecting with others, with creativity a key impact pillar for EBT in its new strategic direction.

Gary Pleece
CEO of East Brighton Trust

“Our vision is one of an inclusive local economy where everyone has the chance to shape their own future, no matter their background. Moulsecoomb Place is a huge step towards that, creating real pathways into skills, creativity, enterprise and community connection. These aren’t empty words, we want to see system change for those that don’t get the same access as the rest of the city.”

“There’s a crisis for grassroots spaces, places that allow real human connection and growth. Projects like Moulsecoomb Place are vital. East Brighton Trust and AudioActive are creating something that genuinely changes the game for young people in Brighton.”
