Nurturing a Love for Reading at St Mark’s Primary School

Thanks to East Brighton Trust’s Enrichment Grants, local primary schools in the East Brighton community are able to bring enriching and essential programs to their students. These grants play a crucial role in broadening horizons and sparking curiosity among young learners.

We’re excited to announce that the latest grant awarded to St Mark’s Primary School has been put to inspiring use, allowing them to introduce the “Accelerated Reader” programme. This initiative has already begun fostering a strong reading culture within the school.

The Accelerated Reader programme is widely recognised for its effectiveness in supporting literacy. It enables teachers to track students’ reading progress and offers valuable guidance for those who may need extra support, all while encouraging independent reading.

Jane Fendley, Headteacher at St Mark’s, shared her appreciation:

“Your generous grant has allowed us to make a meaningful investment in new reading programmes for our students. We’re already seeing a positive impact on both their enthusiasm for reading and their literacy skills.”

She added, “The children are not only more excited about reading, but they are also developing skills that will support them throughout their education and beyond.”

We also heard some wonderful feedback from Year 6 students:

“It was nice; it gave me harder books to challenge me.”

“It extended me and convinced me to keep going with my reading.”

The project has been named ‘Nurturing a Love of Reading,’ and it’s clear the students at St Mark’s are embracing all it has to offer.

As Dr. Seuss reminds us:

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
