World Food Day – Standing Together Against Food Insecurity
This World Food Day, we’re reminded that access to good, nutritious food is still out of reach for too many people in our city. A recent report by the Brighton & Hove Food Partnership revealed that over 5,800 people seek food support every week; a stark reminder of how widespread food insecurity has become.
Across Brighton and Hove, incredible organisations are stepping up to tackle this issue head-on.
At The Real Junk Food Hub, surplus food that would otherwise go to landfill is intercepted and turned into nutritious meals for the community. With donations from brands like M&S, Waitrose, and Higgidy Pies, as well as crates of fresh produce originally destined for some of Brighton’s top restaurants donated by Menu Partners, they ensure that high-quality food doesn’t go to waste – it goes where it’s needed most, and also supplies their three cafes, including The Fitzherbert Community Hub.
FareShare Sussex & Surrey also play a vital role, redistributing surplus food to over 248 charities and community groups, many of them providing meals and support to people across Brighton and Hove.
East Brighton Food Co-op continues to set the standard for community-driven support with its award-winning Meals on Wheels service, delivering freshly cooked, nutritious meals to residents across Brighton & Hove every day, often facilitating hospital discharges and helping to prevent malnutrition.
At East Brighton Trust, we’re proud to be part of a community where so many people work together to reduce waste, support neighbours, and make sure everyone has access to good food.
While 8.4 million people in the UK are affected by food poverty and over 9 million tonnes of food are wasted each year; enough to feed 30 million people, we’re committed to doing our part. Our goal is to help our community access nutritious, high-quality food, and we hope to start making a positive impact very soon.
